How long have you been fishing?
First went out with my dad in 1960. He kept telling me not to cast my pickerel rig… funny thing, I out fished him! #5 years pretty seriously going after those big toothy critters.
What inspired you to become a Lund Pro-Staff?
I saw all the top anglers with Lund and wanted to be apart of that family. I was doing seminars at the Mid-Canada Boat show as an independent and was given a Lund Shirt to wear on stage…That was the start of the best alliance of my life. I have had the opportunity to meet all the big boys from the USA pro-staff and they welcomed me like one of their own. Top guys like Gofron, Randash, Backer, Seidlinger, and Roach. Tony Roach actually came up for our AYA ice derby…I have many good friends on pro-staff that will last a lifetime…..It is like being part of one big family…
Can you tell us the largest fish you have ever caught?
BIG, Big, Big Musky….I have it on film, I never measured it but I am sure it was 58-60 inches long and tipped the scales well over 50 pounds…I have had several seasons were I have boated double digits over 50 inch. My best guess it that I have caught over 300 in the 50 inch class. Sounds like a pile, but I average about 7 a year. My best year was 227 musky with 23 over 50”. Musky Mania gave me a special shirt for having caught 8 over 50” that year on their lure. I don’t believe that that record has been broken yet!
Where do you mostly fish and what tournaments can we see you in this season?
I get out when ever I can. One of the things I like to do is bring new anglers to events to fish with me….It is very seldom that I will have the same partner for each event. I enjoy fishing with everyone and was recently told by the Mayor of RED Lake Ontario, that I was the friendliest competitor out there! I was truly honored by his statement as this is what I stand for. I have no secrets and share as much as I can…I want to see everyone do well and catch fish.
In what ways are you involved in the angling community?
I could not be any busier… ever Alone Foundation, AYA Ice Derby, AYA Lac Du Bonnet Manitoba, AYA International, Red River Walleye, Canadian ESOX Association, Walleye anglers of Manitoba, Manitoba Bass Anglers. If I am not raising money for Cancer or another charity I can be heard on CJOB 68 doing my weekly radio show “Let’s Talk Fishing”. I love Manitoba and all our province has to offer.
Pick five words to describe yourself.
charitable, kind, out spoken, loyal, hard working
What is the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever bought?
A motorcycle… Owned it for 3 years and never insured it to drive…must have been my mid-life crisis.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
My Grandfather told me to stick together with family and be kind and loyal to your friends. I can sit down and count many friends that I have. They are true friends and can be counted on in a crunch!
What trait do you admire in people?
Like Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure….be excellent to everybody! It will come back to you two fold!
What was the best year of your life?
Every day is an adventure. I don’t judge myself on tournament finishes. I enjoy teaching and watching others grow. The best day was when my son fished The Kenora Bass International with me at 11 years old and we finished 41 in a field of 200. Still the best finish I have had in the KBI. Every year is getting better as I grow older…meeting new friends, sharing a few soda pops, yet still able to get out there and as my buddy Jason Gauthier say” get’er done” and that’s how we Roll!
What’s your worst habit?
I need to lose some weight, but I love the taste of good food…I eat to much way to much pasta! Health wise I need to shed a few and quit smoking.
What’s your favorite model of Lund to fish out? Why?
By far the Predator! Big livewell, lots of room and very fishable! However I had the 2075 with the 300 Verado this year and I kind of enjoyed those tournament take off’s... then watching everyone eat my dust... the windshield was good as I am getting a little older and I like to stay warm. After all I put my rig away Dec 5 last year so I do a lot of late fall fishing for Ski’s and gators. Can’t forget about those giant emerald “eyes” in Pine Falls!
Anything else you would like to say to our entire staff at Lund Boats?
Everyone I have met…be it at the local plant or in New York Mills has been awesome. Ryan always keeps me in the loop and it is great to see Rory at tournament events. I wait eagerly every year for my good friend Dave Randash to come up to Pine falls. I really enjoyed the photo shoot a few years ago as it gave me the opportunity to touch base with the other pro-staff. I could mention a whole bunch of names but it would include almost all the pro-staff so I won’t do that! Just happy to be apart of the best!
This year I was very proud of the AYA championship in Kenora…it was awesome to have our fearless leader Dirk in attendance. I enjoyed our time chatting and look forward to flying the Lund banner for years to come. Lund makes the hottest boat on the planet and I am proud to drive and sell the product.
